1. Lying Down

It all starts with this step — Zen Breathing while lying down.

It’s quite difficult to suddenly start breathing deeply, without relaxing first. First, you need to prepare your posture and mood to get ready for Zen Breathing. Although lying down is the easiest position to relax in, many people still strain their bodies while doing so. These people find it hard to fall asleep, or may be light sleepers. They may also suffer from insomnia or sleep disorders. Their bodies are constantly in ‘active mode’, but once they become relaxed they’ll be able to fall asleep more easily.

When you’ve mastered Zen Breathing while lying down, you can practise Zen it before going to bed everyday. This method will help you fall asleep naturally, and allow you to wake up the next morning feeling energised, and refreshed.

2. Sitting

Once you’ve mastered Zen Breathing while lying down, the next step is to practise it while sitting.

The most natural position for Zen Breathing is to sit down comfortably, in a position that can be held for a long time. However, sitting with the wrong posture can actually cause your body to ache and become tired. Crossing your legs can cause your body to lean to the side, and potentially strain your body even more.

The best way to sit is to relax your abdomen, and loosen your upper body. Besides being the most comfortable sitting position, it looks more appealing one to onlookers.

In your daily life, you’ll find yourself sitting for most of the day. If you use this time to practise Zen Breathing, you’ll definitely feel the change.

Even at work, it’s easy to introduce Zen Breathing into your everyday lifestyle. Starting this habit will help you strengthen your core, and practise deep breathing. And if done right, after 1-2 weeks you’ll feel the stiffness in your shoulders disappear.

3. Standing

After you’ve learnt Zen Breathing while sitting, the final step is to practise it while standing. This method takes some skill, but once you’ve mastered it, you’ll find yourself using Zen Breathing constantly in your everyday life. Of course, you still need to set aside time for Zen Breathing every morning. However, using Zen Breathing properly throughout the day has numerous benefits.

Once you can use Zen Breathing while standing, your upper body will loosen up, and deep breathing will come more naturally to you. You’ll also become more relaxed and happy, as you gradually take back control of your mind and body.
